Dappen groaned when he heard that. He figured Tim Harris wanted to leave something with Sandy, some horror that she would never forget—or some guilt she would carry for the rest of her life. But he promised Wilhams that he would talk to Sandy and call back. She might not be willing to come in; she had been through so much already.
Don Dappen talked to Sandy, explaining that he felt Tim was going to pull something—that he would not let her walk away without feeling that somehow she shared his guilt. “It’s up to you if you want to go down or not.”
Sandy said nothing for a long time, and then she looked up. “I’ll go.”
Dappen called Phil Williams and told him that he and Sandy would be there in about fifteen minutes.
It was April 7, very early now on Saturday morning, but it was still warm. Even so, Sandy’s arms were covered with goose bumps. As much as she had tried to prepare herself for what she had feared would come, she was not ready. There was no way she would ever be ready.
Tim sat alone now in Bruce Colton’s office, facing the state attorney. It was smaller than the conference room where Tim had spent the whole afternoon with Phil and Rick. There was only Colton’s desk with a phone, a jug of sharpened pencils, a Scotch tape dispenser, and two pictures of the state attorney’s family. There was a typewriter and a little table with a lamp whose base looked like a globe. Incongruously, two stuffed animals—a tiger and a white Scottie dog—sat beside the lamp. There were no pictures on the wall, nothing for Tim Harris to look at except Bruce Colton’s eyes.
As Bruce Colton entered the room Phil Williams shoved a microrecorder into Colton’s suit jacket.
Tim sat in one of the two black leather chairs in front of the desk, his head down.
“Phil called,” Colton began, “and Sandy’s coming. Okay? He hasn’t explained a whole lot to her, just that you’re here and you want to talk to her.”
“Can I talk to her?”
“If that’s what you wanted me to do.”
“I appreciate it.”
Before they even touched on the subject that lay between them like a sleeping lion, before they roused all the ugliness and tragedy that had to be in Tim Harris’s brain, Colton made it impeccably clear that he could promise Tim nothing at all. “I don’t even want you to tell me anything because you’re thinking that ‘Sure he’s telling me he can’t promise me this—but I know if I tell him, that he will do this or that for me.
“I know what your job is,” Tim said. “I know what you’re expected to do.”
Tim had been asked again if he wanted Phil or Rick or Captain Sullivan in the room while he gave his statement to Colton, and he shook his head when Colton asked him again.
“I don’t want them.”
“All right.”
